Why Mindfulness Works When You’re Anxious

Elizabeth Cush on Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness takes practice, but it’s worthwhile. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush offers techniques for practicing mindfulness to help manage stress and anxiety.

When we are anxious there are things we can do to help calm or bring ourselves back to a more grounded place.

Show Notes:

The modern world can feel like a very scary place, even when the perceived threat doesn’t really pose an immediate danger to our wellbeing. Still, like our ancient ancestors who had to run from sabre-toothed tigers, we respond physically to threats—past or future, real or imagined. In this episode of the Woman Worriers podcast, host Elizabeth Cush, LGPC, a licensed professional therapist and founder of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., talks about what happens when you perceive a threat and how you can use mindfulness to ground yourself in the safety of the present moment. She also guides you through a mindfulness meditation and shares some tips and techniques for living mindfully.

Listen and learn:

  • What happens in your body when you sense a threat

  • Why reading an alarming headline can feel like a life-or-death experience

  • Modern-day “threats” that can activate our fight/flight/freeze response

  • Why you are more likely to feel threatened if you have experienced trauma in the past
